As a huge fan of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, I was more than anxious to get my hands on a copy of Final Fantasy XIV as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the initial release of the game was atrocious, but with time and some new leadership the game revived itself and became arguably the best subscription based MMO on the market currently and thus I decided it needed a proper GamerNation review.
The adventure in FFXIV A Realm Reborn starts in the world of Eorzea and let me tell you it is absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful daytime skies, sparkling star nights, amazing landscapes, and very detailed comrades and foe character models makes this game one of the most beautiful RPG experiences available. The music scores, as to be expected from a Final Fantasy title, are equally as impressive and really immerse you into the world as you adventure through it. There are plenty of character models and personalization to choose from when creating a character and if you’re and old FFXI player like myself the models will be delightfully familiar. I chose to play a lalafell which is the equivalent to a tarutaru for those of you with a FFXI background. The main story quest line is really good, no spoilers here, and it really gives you more meaning behind who you are and what the purpose of your existence is within the world of Eorzea. There are also raids, dungeons, leves, and much more content than you’ll ever need in order to advance your character. The crafting system is well done because it allows you to craft large quantities without having to manually do it after every synth which is something FFXI players are all too familiar with. I think the single greatest thing about FFXIV over other MMORPGS is the ability to switch classes on the fly. In FFXI, you could switch classes but going to the moghouse but in FFXIV Square Enix goes a step further and allows you to change your class anywhere by simply equipping the corresponding weapon for that class which I feel is fantastic.
FFXIV: A Realm Reborn is a game that all MMORPG genre fans should experience. With it’s superb graphics, amazing gameplay, and accessibility through the PS4 or PC versions there’s just no reason any fan of the series shouldn’t check out this title. Don’t let the subscription fee scare you off wither because SE is constantly throwing more content at this game and the price tag is simply fair for the amount of content refreshes and additions this game receives.
Graphics: Amazing, best in class display of any RPG on the market.
Sound: Equally amazing. The scores integrated into this title are amazing as one would expect from the Final Fantasy series.
Controls: Very innovative and functional from the PS4 standpoint. The PC version uses the tried and true keyboard/mouse function but also gives the option to use a gamepad if preferred. Both UI’s are effective and responsive.
Replayability: The game is endless hours of replayability as new content pours into the title on a quarterly basis. You will never beat the game entirely and will move onto something else before ever running out of things to do. This is a title that lives up to its subscription based business model.
